In 1941 my grandmother aged 71 lived in a top storey flat (4th floor)in Streatham overlooking The Common. She worked in Millbank.
Her daughter who lived in Farnborough, Hants. was always asking her to retire and come and live with her, but she refused.
Later in the year, her flat was bombed, and one of the walls in the flat collapsed. She was asked by the authorities to evacuate - she refused. Her daughter visited her and begged her to move - she would not. The excuse she gave to her daughter was that in the coming week some naval ratings were coming to put up a temporary wall and she had to stay there to make them a sandwich and cup of tea.
My grandmother stayed in her flat throughout the war. In 1945 there were only two people left in these flats. A lady lving on the ground floor, and my grandmother who lived on the fourth floor, there were no lifts in these flats.
My grandmother Mrs Caroline Auys lived to the age of 91 years.
