This story was told by Irene Dimmock and transcribed by Laura Townshend and Louise Tully.
I was 9 or 10, and a plane was shot down during one of the raids. The plane landed on Walker's, the jewellers, outside Victoria Station. The pilot parachuted out and landed on the roof of the houses on Aylesford Street. I can remember he looked quite young with very blonde hair, the contrast between the brown and the blonde helped me to remember it. He came through the skylight and down the back stairs, taking off his parachute as he came down. As children, we were more frightened than the pilot, so we yelled when we saw him coming down in his flying kit. Three or four men appeared and took him out, leaving his parachute behind, which we hid. Later we unpicked the panels, which took ages, then we used the material for a wedding and my bridesmaids dress, (including silk undies!).It was the only time that i ever wore silk undies!
