after an air raid all kids went out next morning to look for shrapnel.one morning my friend and i went out to see what we could find,in st pauls road the gutters were lined with unexploded incendiary bombs.we took one each and went back to my house,my mother was at work as my father had died earlier.with a hammer and chisel we proceded to open the bombs up.inside was a hard silvery grey material we scraped it out,put it in a cocoa tin took it down the garden and dropped a match in it.the flame must have gone up 40 feet, the neighbours fetched mother out of work. who naturally went berserk.we took the other bomb to victors house, put it in the dustbin and dropped another match in.this was a galvanised bin and it disappeared.when i think of it now i go quite cold.
