EIGHT

Self explanatory copy of an action report:

ACTION REPORT

At 1745 lookout reported 2 (Two) aircraft flying low, bearing RED 90 at a distance of about 4000 yards, which were soon identified as JU88's. Action stations were immediatley sounded but planes were not engaged, being out of range and having made off.
At 1810, by which time it was dusk, and moon had arisen, planes (?) were seen approaching from RED 45. Barrage was immediatley opened by all guns that would bear, as the planes were close.
Two glider bombs were dropped on either quarter of escort 3 (Three) cables ahead. Many more attack runs were made and gliderbombs, and high level bombs (probably aerial torpedoes as well) were dropped. At 2045 the all-clear was pronounced and we resumed normal watches.

During the time of the attck four ships received direct hits and sank; and many near misses were observed. One aircraft was definitely shot down and two probables.

We had two minor stoppages on Oerlikens, but these were soon rectified.
Note for armourer:
Actual practice shows that for'd end of vessel can only be covered by 2 (Two) Oerlikons. It would be possible to mount more weapons forward on the foc'stle head.

Message 1 - Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships (DEMS)

Posted on: 19 November 2003 by paul gill - WW2 Site Helper

Firstly, I found this very interesting.
Where were you going to and when? My father had a nightmare journey to Malta on Operation Substance. The Leinster ran aground off Gibraltar and they were told to expect internment but he was taken off by destroyer and travelled the rest of the way on the Manxman.
Some 20 years ago I read that there was a recommendation that guns were removed from merchant ships as they failed to justify their keep in shooting down enemy aircraft. It was probably true but someone said it was irrelevant! Another study showed that the DEMS were less likely to be sunk than ships without guns. Your gunnery was clearly successful but did your own observations agree with this study?
