I have a tape recording of my fathers story. It goes a bit like this. He was a Captain in the 5th tank regiment having been in the TA in Jersey and Bristol before the war and was in the first group of TA to go to Sandhurst to train as offices. He was then sent to France and almost immediately brought back again.
After he was blown up in his tank by an 88 at Sidi Rizegh (see)he was evacuated to Durban where he met my mother, married and they cam back to London in September 42. He then joined SOE in Baker Street in the Polish division with ..
The untold story is this - he was promoted to temporary Major in 1944 and told to take 24 cases of gold to Foggia in Italy( by then the Poles needed money rather than people being dropped back into Poland) from Cornwall. He travelled down and was about to board when for some reason he changed his mind about the plane - it took off and crashed almost immediately. He took the next plane with his gold to Casablanca, on to Sardinia where he was entertained by the Americans and then on to Foggia
