Six years ago I was looking at a book 'Portsmouth from the Air' and at the back was a photograph of the housing estate where I was raised but, in the bottom right hand corner there were located some nissen huts.
I did some research and found out it wasa former naval camp, a satelitte camp to HMS Daedalus Lee on Solent and named HMS DaedalusIII. On further research I found out that after the camp closed it was used as a Displaced Persons camp for the peoples of the Baltic states who escaped to the west at the end of the war.
To the south of this camp was another camp built for the bombed out people of Portsmouth which was never used and remained empty until the eve of D Day.
Yet another camp, Belmont was discovered and more research and then another, Stockheath Naval Camp, constructed under trees so that the nissen huts could not been seen from the air.
In all it has taken me more than six years of research and cost a fortune in mail and phone calls and with all the unpublished photographs and anecdotes I thought it would be easy to get published, but alas no.
In the end I published it myself at great expense and it is on the market.
If you would like to purchase a copy of The Naval Camps of Bedhampton,Havant and Leigh Park please send details to bob_hind@hotmail.com or phone 02392 435936.
Thank you.
