The two airship hangers at Cardington were camaflaged by painting houses on the side. One evening Lord Haw Haw (William Joyce), the broadcaster, mentioned that they hadn't put chimneys on them. Also unfortunatly in 1941 the 230ft landing mast, which had as steam winch at the top was demolished as scrap for the war effort. When you consider that RAF Cardington was well known to the German airforce, as German airships had visited in the 1930's, and therefore the route and compass heading were well known, it is interesting that they chose never to attack. Perhaps they had it in mind that it would be useful to them if they invaded.
