I was born in Dulwich in London in 1923. I went to Dulwich college leaving college in 1939 when they proposed to evacuate the college to Devon, but if you had a letter from your parents you could leave at the beginning of the hostilities. I took advantage of this offer as I was running a scout troop, the 14th Camberwell. I lived in grove lane and in 1940 we had the first magnetic mine in London. It was 4 sets of tramlines going up Dogkennel Hill that drew the mine to Dulwich. It blew ten people into pieces and I helped collect the pieces in a sack. It blew ten house to pieces and wrecked thirty more, but nothing was ever printed as they did not want the Germans to know what damage a mine could do.
