This is a letter sent from E. Risborough to Mrs Warren (Arthur Warren's Wife) from South Africa.
Dear Mrs Warren,
It may surprise you to receive a letter form South Africa, but this is just a short note to give you news of your husband.
While on holiday with friends in Durban I helped to entertain toops of the transport ships which put into port. Your husband was among the boys that we entertained and he asked us to write and let you know that he had completed the first stage of his journey safely. As civilians we can tell you more, and our letters are likely to reach you more quickly than his.
Durban is very British and patriotic and when the troops arrive people here can't do enough for them. The town is filled with soldiers and sailors and people love to invite the boys home and show them how much we appreciate all they are doing. The convoy left a few days ago for the Middle East, and the town is quiet again.
We were very interested in all Mr Warren's experiences in France and Belgium - one wonders how they survived all the hardships.
I was particularly interested to hear all about the conditions at home, as I am a Londoner and have been in South Africa only two years. My parents and friends are still all in London and Kent.
Wishing you and your child all the best and hoping you will soon have your husband home with you again.
Yours sincerely,
E.Risborough.
