At the beginning of the war my brother, Jack, was an electrician. Although aged nearly 25 he was not called up to serve in the armed forces as he was considered to be in a ‘reserved occupation’. He stayed in England throughout the war working on all of the local bases as they were constructed in and around the Fairford (Gloucestershire) area. Just before D-Day, he received an envelope clearly marked with a date and time to be opened. When he opened it inside were his orders to report to RAF Fairford that evening with a change of clothes and wash gear. He was also told to expect to remain on the base until further notice. The problem was, that even though work on the base had been completed, it hadn't officially been handed over to the Ministry for War and therefore they had to be on hand should there be any problems. My brother ended up staying on the base for 3 days and nights before being allowed to leave.
