I was a 9 year old when war broke out. I remember it was a Sunday, we had a little house shop. My mother was very poorly and my Dad worked at Euxton Bomb works.

My youngest brother did not pass for the forces, so he was sent to Blackpool to work at Vickers Armstrong. My oldest brother Bill was in the paratroopers. My Mother continued to be ill and in 1944 she was taken to Queens Park Hospital where she died.

A week later, Bill's wife Nellie received a telegram to say he was reported missing in Arnham. It was to be 12 months before official confirmation that Bill had died when trying to get back across the River Rhine.

Bill had 3 sons, Kenneith was aged 8, Jimmy was about 5 and Dennis was myabe 4. Of course they never saw Dad again.

Nellie (Bill's wife) brought up her sons whilst working as a weaver at a local mill.
