When I was 15 I was living in Edenfield in Rossendale. Edenfield is a short distance from Stubbins and one night a bomb dropped on the river bank at Stubbins, destroying the chippy and ironmongers shop. There was this terrific bang in the middle of the night that shook the whole of Edenfield and the chippy was no more.
My father was the local policeman, he had retired once, but had been called back to duty at the start of the war.
I ended up working at Turnbull and Stockdales, doing war work. They manufactured cloth, most of which was used for making uniforms.
I remember the blackout, having to carry candles in jam jars and walking almost everywhere.
We had ration books only getting small amounts of butter, meat, bacon and sugar and dried egg powder.
In Edenfield we had a big celebration on V E Day, fireworks and a bonfire and everyone was so happy the war was over.
