The 50th ‘N’ Division
Through the battle scarred countries of Belgium and France,
Its division won glory and fame,
‘Twas honoured in making the only advance,
Thus adding a star to its name.
But the German hordes marched forward and on,
Till its ranks were badly depleted,
Its inch by inch it contested the Hun,
Till perforce it retired, undefeated.
At Dunkirk it fought like a wide cat from hell,
And maintained its own glorious name,
The call to retire to England could tell,
It went full spirit and lame,
Then placed once again in the midst of the fight,
In the blistering head and sand,
With tireless patrols and savage delight,
It fought for a free native land.
Then came its glory, its valour and fame,
It’s the Axis on one again,
With fire in its soul, its heart set aflame,
The motto was ‘Fight on and gain’
But its undying courage of hundreds of miles,
Ceaseless, relentless and game,
Brought tragic results to those men of all smiles,
A rearguard had caused it to wane.
Yet undaunted, it answered a call that was made,
From the island it fought to defend,
Return to the battle, return unafraid,
Carry on my sons, to the end,
This message to hope, turned darkness to light,
Determined to answer one word,
To Alemein, Mareth, Sicily, fight,
They fought and fell, while we prayed.
The Leaders and men of the famous division,
A Thorn in the axis have proved,
Their courage will grant us a final decision,
When the danger to England is moved,
We take all our hats off to these gallant men,
Who prolonged a serious revision,
And down in the annals, its name goes again,
The 50th Northumbrian Division.
