This story was submitted by Mrs L Pearce of Bodmin
I got married in September 1940 and I was called up to go into the ATS in 1941.1 had to go to Tilehurst in Reading for training with troops at Willington Barracks for 6 weeks.
After that we were posted down to Lulworth Cove in DorsetI spent the rest of the war there. We had to have our uniform and go through the gas chamber. It was not nice as it made your eyes water for a while.
Then we had to learn to do ARP duty. We got attached to the Royal Tank Corp and we had to learn to do different jobs. I took a job in the cookhouse to help look after the troops because they came from abroad to train on tank courses.
One night there was an Air Raid near the camp, and one girl was killed. The bomber was making for the naval base at Portland but dropped its bombs near our camp instead.
I lost my house after I got demobbed because my husband was overseas in the Royal Engineers but I got all new furniture and started again before my husband got demobbed. He came home in 1946 and we started living again.
Sadly I lost my husband in 1977.1 am a widow and I have a son. I lost my only daughter.
This is my story. Mrs L Pearce
