This story was submitted to the peoples war site by a pupil at esher high school on behalf of mr jones and has been added t6o the site with his permission.mr jones fully understands the sites terms and conditions.
I was working at covent gardens when i got my call up in 1943 i had to report to hms collinwood in fareham i did my training there for about 10 weeks and then ten days leave i had to report to portsmouth barrats in a short time then i had to report to Hms diaden the i was on her when we went to see scapa flow with the home fleet the we started doing convoy work at russia conditions were very bad and we only had 1 hours day light in 24 hours as time went on we went to norway in january 45 at 3 o clock in the morning we was fireing the guns we got hit by the german gun fire and my mate on the pom pom next to me he got killed straight away i also recieved bad wounds the opperated on me going back to scapa flow from there i went to aberdeensheer by a hospital bout until i was well enough to leave, that was the end of my stay on Hms diadem.
