This account was taken by Denis Price of the 大象传媒 People`s War Team from Alan Massey at the 大象传媒 Radio Humberside Bus at the Driffield Show.
During my war service in the RAF I served in a Balloon unit and after overseas service was posted to Surrey which was very handy for me as a Londoner. Our barrage balloon site was near a village called Hurst Green which wasn`t far from Reigate.
I remember this particular time, it would have been in 1944, one of the doodlebugs came over to the right of our site. About two miles from us were some big Naval guns which fired the first shell at it which exploded just ahead of it. The second shell exploded just behind it and the third was a bullseye blowing it to pieces with the bits landing about a field away from us. We all cheered!.
On Another occasion I saw a Spitfire fly into our balloon cables clipping his wing. He turned over and I thought he`d had it but luckily he righted himself and flew off safely.
