I went to school in Slough, and when war was declared in 1939 we were given three weeks' holiday -- we were in our last term. The head decided there needed to be a first air squad to help the injured. At the age of 12, the kids were indoor messengers for the ARP. They also formed messengers for the police, fire service to take messages to HQ to the sub offices because there were no telephones. The PAMS -- Police Auxilary Messenger Service -- we joined to get a tin hat that said POLICE. I was serving an apprenticeship and one of my jobs was to go up on the roof during air-raids, and spot enemy aircraft and flying bombs. The youngsters took a specific part in the war, the army and naval cadets. It is very important to mention this, as it has been mostly forgotten.
