FEB 14th 1942 When Singapore fell we realized that we were going to be part of the action, we had picked up signals, telling us the Japanese were advancing, little did we know just how fast. We pulled out of barracks and were told to collect our belongings and put them in stores ready to be collected and bought to us later. Unfortunately there was no time and all our belongings were torched. We dug ourselves in at Anthrax hill. We later pulled out and I was told to go to the local GM motor yard nearby to pick up spares. In our retreat we hit a Japanese road block this was the first big battle that I encountered, we were held up overnight and had to wait for re-enforcements.
On entering Tharrawadi I turned my vehicle over spilling the contents over the road and down the embankment a motorcycle ended up in the trees above us, myself and my mate had to guard the vehicle overnight until we could be rescued. The Japanese were just up the road we didn't know whether we were going to be attacked or not, that was probably one of the most scariest times I can remember. Luckily we were rescued as soon as it was light enough and we rejoined the company just in time for breakfast.
