I remember the blitz. One day we were under the stairs by the door. There was an explosion and the door blew in. My old man dived for shelter in the hallway. He was shaken but not hurt. I felt very frightened.

We had an Anderson shelter, but on that occasion we did not have time to get there. You went down small steps to get there and it held no more than 6 people. It was hard to get out. You had to be pulled.

When the sirens went off at night my brother took no notice and stayed in bed. He didn't want to go to the Anderson shelter - he preferred to be in bed!
