I was 16 when I was called up for the Home Guard. I used to carry bombs and rockets on the railway which was very exciting but dangerous. We did have some fun; I played for Cambridge School boy鈥檚 cricket team and we played at Lords. I went to St. Philips School. We didn鈥檛 have as many toys as we do now; the only toy I had was a steam engine.
I was a farmer heading to Brimsdown on June the 27th 1944 when the track got bombed. It was bombed quite a lot. It blew the railway up so we had to abandon the train. I heard a lot of bombing raids. I could see the destruction from the Blitz in London from Mill Road Bridge. We had German bombers hit a crane and kill a soldier on the bridge. I felt apprehensive. I drove a royal train once or twice to the station. I used to set pigeons into the wild.
My mother took in evacuees. I had a brother who had died as a baby. Some of my friends were killed during the war.
