My war started in the UK and I volunteered to go to Egypt. In 1945 I went to Heliopolis where I was a telephonist. On one leave I went to Jerusalem while I was there I walked along the Jerico Road to Bethany and on a beautiful morning a couple of camel trains passed and the drivers all waved good morning. Then I felt this little hand in mine as I walked along, I looked down and saw a little Arab girl of about six, she had sandles in one hand whilst holding mine, and talking Arabic which I didn鈥檛 understand at all and she walked with us all the way to Bethany. Then she let go and disappeared. On the bus back to Jerusalem I saw her sitting on some steps eating an orange.
I remember that as a wonderful day. Another wonderful thing that happened in Egypt was that I met my husband and we got engaged and to celebrate we spent the day at the pyramids, a guide came up and said my name is Moses but not the one in the bullrushes.
