It was a great Saturday when my sister Grace got married,
the weather was sunny and lovely blue skies, a day all girls dream off but unfortunatly it was in the middle of a war
and at the height of the Doodlebug raids. she had a great wedding people were cheering her as she drove from the church
to the reception, the people knew how hard it was to have a white wedding in those dark days and to brave it out while raids were going on.
Everybody arrived at the rooms above a pub for the reception, which was all put together with everone helping out with their food rations. People started drinking and relaxing and becoming very drunk but at least they were forgeting the war and most af all enjoying themselves.
I was about 13 to 14 and put in charge of fire watching, term used for someone looking out for Germans planes and their bombs,
I had to keep going up on the roof to keep watch and let them know if there was any danger but the day they picked for the wedding happened to be one of Londons very heavy days dor Doodlebug attacks. These would fly over with a terrible noise like a tin can full of stones then when they run out of rocket fuel would dive to the ground and explode with devistating force.
All i could see from my perch on the roof was a sky full of the Flying bombs, engines stopping followed by very large explosions, I kept running up and down stairs shouting "Take cover" but people just carried on drinking and singing all the more until i finally gave up and went on the roof and just watched the raid .
Everbody said they had a wonderful day and went home very, very happy.
