Alfred Wilding of Lostock Hall, Preston, remembers -
In 1942 I went for a medical at St Paul's school. I went into the main hall to get stripped down to my underpants with a few other men.
Three doctors were sat at a table, one doctor was calling each person up and asking questions. They called me up and asked me to do 20 step ups, then they checked my heart with a stethoscope and told me to sit down. After everybody had completed their examinations, a man came to each locker room and told each one of us whether we could have a job in the war. They told me I couldn't because I was not fit enough. He could obviously see the disappointment in my face he said "never mind, you'll probably live to 99" - I'm 96 now!
