my dad had joined the british army, royal artillery, to get away fom guernsey because he had decided that he had no long term future there as a working class man, this is after he had married my mum. he was then sent with the b.e.f. to france just prior to the war breaking out. he does not talk about his experiences there unless pushed but the following has been squeased from him. he was in a regiment that had what lookes like bombs on there collars with a royal artillery badge on his hat, flat. he was with a platoon of 25 pounder guns which he tells me quickly ran out of ammunition as the battle went on. as each gun was spiked, the crew were sent back to the beaches and the remaining shells divided between the remaining guns. at the time when sheltering from enemy gunfire a large amount of cavalry horses galloped into the field where they were. as the horses were in full battle regallia it was decided to strip the horses of it so that they could graze and hopefully stand a better chance of survival. my dad took off a horse besides all it's equipment, a french cavalry sword which my family have to this day. eventualy it was my dads turn to go back to dunkirk where he tells that after being on the beach for a while he was called forewards in bunches of 5 when they walked down a type of wall and on to a fishing boat that brought them back to england. i hav;nt finnished yet. when he gets back he gets leave, what does he do, he goes to weymouth and gets on a boat to guernsy. he picks up me and my mum and brings us back to england with only the cloths we stood up in,we were told to bring no luggage, i was4 at the time. we were on one of the last boats to leave the island. we went to middlesex, then to st. hellens, then to bradford yorks.my dad is still alive, 92years!!
