This story was submitted to the the People's War site by Stoke-on-Trent Libraries on behalf of Mrs X and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I lived in Cheadle. The Guildhall was the local dance hall and was very, very popular. British troops stationed at nearby Alton Towers used to spend their leisure time at the dances there. Then the American soldiers arrived. They were stationed at either Uttoxeter or Sudbury. They used to let the black soldiers come to Cheadle at the weekend while the white soldiers stayed in Uttoxeter or went to Derby.

Cheadle was popular with the troops. Occasionally though the British soldiers organised dances at the hotel in Alton. The people from Cheadle were invited to these.
