In 1940, My Nan was sitting in her garden on the top of a hill with her Mum and Dad and her 6 brothers and sisters, when they heard what they first thought was a motor bike or car. It was in fact a doodle bug from German heading for London. They saw it about 30 seconds after they first heard it. The rushed into the house an hid under the living room which was the Anderson selter. It went past, so they went back outside to see where it was landing if it did. It did and it landed about 1/4 of a mile away near her friend's house. There was a massive explosion and it it blased out her friend's windows and doors and some of hers. And that was my nan's experience

Message 1 - The Doodle bugs

Posted on: 11 July 2004 by Peter - WW2 Site Helper

With respect, 1940 must be the wrong date. The very first Doodlebug (V1) to reach England fell on Swanscombe in the early hours of 13 June 1944 - there were no doodlebugs in 1940. No Anderson shelters were inside houses, the indoor type was the much later Morrison shelter; Anderson shelters required a substatial covering of earth and were built in gardens.
