During the war in Manchester Olive was asked to do the shopping for her mother whilst she was at work at the factory. She was given free range to buy what she could from the rations available. One day she decided to buy some whale meat for dinner. Having eaten a couple of mouthfuls she could not force herself to eat anymore. She informed her mother of this who then decided to produce to the whale meat for her again for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next week in the hope that she would eat the rest of the whale meat. Each time she refused. Meanwhile Olive's boyfriend took her to the Fish and Chip shop every night to make sure that she was amply feed. This carried on for just over a week until maggots appeared on the meat. She had won, the meat went in the bin and she never ate whale meat again.
