No such thing as fast food then- except fish and chips! Mother always cooked, although you could buy fagot鈥檚 and peas at some shops.
Before the war my mother baked fairy cakes, sponge, chocolate 茅clairs and currant cakes. For tea we would have bread and butter and jam-also crumpets toasted by the fire.

During the war there was little or no sugar, so for tea we would have bread and butter or dripping. My mother even made cake out of liquid parrafin and set her hair with sugar water.

After the war I queued for hours for bananas for my son, when I gave it him he thought it was a gun! If there was a crowd of people together people thought it was a queue. You would queue for everything- woodbines, coal, logs, potatoes, soap everything.
