Mums work in the war 1939 to 1945
Our mum Esther Haigh worked as a tram conductress in the war. I can鈥檛 remember the day-to-day life of her going to work, as my sister and I were 3 and 1 when the war started. I don鈥檛 know who looked after us during the early years. From the photographs she wore a smart uniform and looked well turned out. As a conductress her job was seeing the passengers on the tram and then going down the aisle and collecting fares.
We used to use the trams quite a lot as we used to go to our auntie鈥檚 who lived at seacroft, Leeds. It was like our second home as Aunty Elsie was our mum鈥檚 sister and she loved us like her own children, always food on the table for us in spite of rationing and always made welcome.
