I lived at 25 Silwood Street, Rotherhithe at the begining of the war with my parents, older brother & younger sister. In August 1939, all my schoolmates (Rotherhithe New Road Juniors) were evacuated by train to the Hailsham area of Sussex, near Eastbourne. This included me, aged 10 and a half, my older brother, Frankie, aged 13 & my sister, Gladys, aged 5. We were kept together but stayed in 3 different houses in Hailsham. Within a 6 month period we saw our parents only once.
We returned to Rotherhithe in February, 1940 but the family moved to a council house at Mottingham, SE9 in March 1940. For the rest of the war, normal life was disrupted by the Blitz, doodlebugs, rockets & much time was spent in air raid shelters at home & at school. Somehow, our family escaped.
