During the war boys were asked to take a hammer into the Welfare to flatten old tin cans for salvage.

My mother was employed at the Dodworth Pit to clean the offices. This involved the whole family. One night we were coming home when a plane came over and dropped three bombs. These landed at Hood Green. We went up to Hood Green at the weekend and if he had dropped one more it would have landed on the farmhouse.

When we heard the plane we started to run, which would have been a waste of time if the bombs had landed at Dodworth. I am sure I remember a man was going to work and he threw his bike over a garden wall and he held on to it!
