Our Evacuee
Soon after the War started I can remember that an evacuee came to stay with my family.
At that time we lived in Mary Street Darwen, and our evacuee, called Lily Lister, came from the Manchester area. At a guess I would say that Lily was about nine or ten years old, whilst at that time I would be about three and a half years old.
I still have a couple of photo`s of Lily, and I often wonder what became of her.
As I was so young at that time, I cannot remember much detail about her, except that she was (to myself) a "big girl". One thing I do remember however, was Lily sitting on my little three wheel bike, and that it bent in the middle. It was my treasured toy,and I can remember the tears I shed till this day.
In later years ,I can recall my mum telling me stories of how Lily was always nervous whenever the sirens were heard, and how she would hide under the stairs, or the large solid wooden table we had.
Lily cannot have been with us for a long time.I dont even remember her going back home. One of the photo`s I have of Lily must have been taken years later ,when Lily was grown up and married. It says on the back "Lily nee Lister".From this I presume that Lily still kept in touch with my family after the war
