When I was a boy we could regularly hear bombs falling on Norwich.
I recall 2-3 incendiary bombs falling on the Baptist Church, some bombs on the Lizard and a landmine at Wattlefield.
My dad had been in the 1st World War and showed no fear when the siren used to go.
My dad was a special constable and when the siren went he had to report to the police station in Wymondham. He always returned home immediately after visiting the police station and in the pitch black the lady opposite with her two sons used to call out ‘Is that you Mr Proctor? Is there any need to get the children up?’
During this time I was a pupil at Browick Road School. Half of each classroom was reinforced with concrete and when the siren went we all had to shelter in the half that was reinforced. It was dark inside this concreted area and the teacher could not see what was going on and we thought that this was great fun.
