When I was 2 and a half years old and my sister six months my mother took us to live in Nescliffe which wasn鈥檛 far from Shrewsbury.
My Grandmother wouldn鈥檛 leave our house in Birmingham, she was afraid that something would happen to it. I believe she saved it twice from incendiary bombs. My father was in the army. We where very lucky as most children where sent off to be billeted with people they didn鈥檛 know and were very homesick.
My mother found us accommodation at the schoolhouse with Mr and Mrs Williams the head master and Mistress and so started a very happy period of my life. I was very spoilt by all the children at this little country school and really loved being a country girl. I never wanted to be a townie again!
After about 10 months mother found a cottage to rent about a mile away. It had quite a lot of land with it and we soon acquired some chickens and ducks. When the hens started to lay I would sit in the hay stack with them and catch the eggs as they were laid! When I started school mom used to cycle down every day with my cooked lunch! I always told her she must have been the finest meals on wheels!
