Then started what I learned later was called the phoney war.I cannot remember how long it lasted but nothing in our lives was different, men went to work I with other children went to school and I remember thinking that there was nothing to be afraid of after all.The Air raid siren would sound but nothing happened, although when I heard that sound I always felt physically sick and my face would drain of colour I experienced that trauma through out
the war.
One day my mother sent me to the local shop that was about a quarter of a mile away,I was half way there when the sirens sounded I stopped froze in my tracks and felt sick,
I turned and ran home as fast as my legs would carry me. People had run into the street and were shouting !its another practise! but their voices sounded unconvincing, then an Air raid warden ran towards them shouting take cover its the real thing.
I ran into my house to find my parent's trying to fit their Gasmasks on, a neighbour
ran into my house shouting get into the shelter. These were Anderson shelters and were buried halfway into the ground and covered with earth.Weall ran to our respective shelters to await whatever was going to happen, when the siren sounded the all clear signal.Although on that occasion
nothing happened it did signal the end of the phoney war.
