Story passed on from granddaughter
My grand-parents were born opposite each other in the east end. They were married and then my grandfather had to go out on the front line to Egypt leaving my grandmother with their child. Whilst he was trekking through the desert, they stopped and he noticed the diamond was missing from his wedding ring. He was devastated. But then he looked in the sand and there was his tiny diamond. He was so relieved because hiswedding ring was his only possession. He took it as sign that he was going to make it home.
Five years away at war this was the only story he told me. He vowed not to mention war again.
