This story was told to Christine Barker at the VE Celebrations in Beverley in 2005
Beverley by Elizabeth Atkinson (nee McLean)

I don’t know if you know of it but on the radio we used to listen in to what we called Lord Haw Haw and he used to tell us how many ships he’d sunk with all hands. Anyway one night we were listening and an announcement was made that the news was HMS Arthur had been sunk with all hands on board. My father said well that’s a lie for a start because HMS Arthur is Butlins Holiday Camp — used as a training camp — not a ship at all!
