When the war started it was announced on the wireless at 11am on September 3rd 1939. When this happened Donny was five and Harold was eleven.
One day, when Donny was walking home, there was a blackout and Donny walked into a lampost and he got a big lump on his head. He could not see anything out of his left eye.
In those days, they were short of pens and pencils. They had to wait until the wood had almost gone, and then they would put the pencil in a metal pencil holder. Harold still has one now.
During the war, Donny's friend had an allotment. He grew raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and gooseberries.(An allotment is like a large vegetable garden.)
While the war was on, Donny lost his friends. He showed us a photograph with him and his friend and the friend was the one who had passed away. He also showed us another photograph with him and all of his friends on.
When the bombs were dropped, the sirens went off and Donny was scared, because of how loud it was. But he didn`t fear anything apart from that.
Donny and Harold did not go to war because they were not old enough. People were not allowed to fight in the war unless they were eighteen or over.(Old people were not allowed to fight and people who had asthma or wore glasses weren`t either.)
When the war ended Donny and Harold were happy because it had been so long since they'd had a normal life.
