A little snapshot of life as a schoolboy during the war.
I attended the Grammar School in Hull from 1940 onwards. As the space on the school site was limited, we had one afternoon a week as Sports Afternoon fo which we had to go the the school field some two miles away.
Because all the sporty young teachers had been sent off to the war, supervision and sports education was severely limited and generally fell to a couple of the more energetic but still middle aged masters.
One afternoon I arrived at the field and strolled over to the pitch where we were due to pretend to play football, and found several of my contempories throwing stones at metal object which was just visible in the mud of the goal mouth. In due course "Sir" came over to see what was happening and within minutes we were chased away from the area and the Engineers' Bomb disposal unit was in charge.
I believe that they unearthed a 500lb HE bomb and for some weeks we were not allowed to go and see what had happened. When we finally got to see the goal moputh there was a small dent in the mud and that was all.
As boys we were naturally more interested than afraid and I felt we should have been able to see them digging the thing up!
