As told to her daughter Carol Young by Gwen Beales, nee Middleton.

When sirens went the massive iron table in the living room in our home in Whiteman Street, Swindon came into use— not remembered too fondly as many bruises gained from walking into it! The mesh sides closed down once inside — led to the feeling of being monkeys in a cage! On hearing the sirens Mum would send her youngest brother Bill upstairs to get her case of treasures and she remembers that once she and her case was inside there being not too much left over room!
