I was 20 years old when the war started and had only been married a year when my husband was called up into the Royal Artillery. When my husband was away I went to work as a nanny in Salisbury and whilst working there I heard that he was back from Dunkirk and was waiting for me back at Waltham, so I bought a train ticket to try and get home to see him. I was just about to get on the train when a friend came running up the platform to tell me that he was at a base near Salisbury, so I exchanged my ticket for one to where he was. After that I came back to Waltham to live with my mum on a farm we had plenty of eggs butter and milk and sometimes we sold some to friends. Lots of planes were shot down in the area as there were many dog fights in the skies and one day I was fruit picking when a doodlebug came down in a field nearby
