My interview with my Grandma Gwen
She was 12 when the war first started. She can鈥檛 really remember the war but she can remember that when the war had been declared she asked her dad what was happening and her dad replied 鈥渋t鈥檚 not going to be very nice, I hope it doesn鈥檛 last. Fred (her brother) will have to go and so will I!鈥
When she was 14 she was sent to Leicester to work with a family that she knew. She was there to look after their children. When her sister (Edna) joined the WAF (women鈥檚 Air Force) she was sent home to work on the land. On the land she worked with German and Italian prisoners. She didn't really like working with them. She said they were ignorant and generally not very nice.
She didn鈥檛 seem to mind that her sister joined the WAF. She said 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 mind, she volunteered and she enjoyed it".
Her clearest memories of the war were the sound of the planes and the German bombers she said they always had a different sound. She can also remember carrying the gasmasks and the other peoples ID cards.
The war hasn鈥檛 really had any effect on her although she did lose her cousin who was in the Navy in Africa.
