I was an electrician on minesweepers in the North Sea and Russian Convoys. The ships in fitilar would pick up a convoy, come in from the English Channel at Dover. We would then exscort the convoy along the coast which had been swept on front of the convoy. The minesweepers was only used until we got into deep water in the North Atlantic. The weather in the North Sea is usually very rough and also very cold. The main hazards in the North Sea were germany boats and submarines.Emerchant ships just in front of us were sunk by a midget submarine. We picked up 16 survivers. After the war our job was to clear the mines for the fisherman.I was retained in the navy to do this which took another 12 months. This story was submitted to the people's war site by pupils at Esher High School on behalf of Mr Gordon Mustard and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Gordon Mustard fully understands the sites terms and conditions.
