I was evacuated when I was 4 years old to Chapel Street, Dalton-in -Furness and stayed there for 9 months.
When I came home to Weaste in Salford it was just in time for the blitz. We didn't have an Andersen shelter, just a brick shelter with a mattress and candles . I'll never forget the smell---damp and horrible.
In the morning when I left home I saw other houses which had been blitzed to the ground--I still remember that smell, too. Each morning after an air raid the local children would collect shrapnel which littered the streets. If you found the nose cone of a shell this was in the big league, a prized possession.
I went to All Souls R.C School in Weaste which got bombed. The building was bombed but the statues of our Lady and Lord remained intact, strangely. As a result of the damage we had to go to All Souls R.C Church for lessons in the morning and St Luke's C of E School in the afternoon.
My grandmother lived with us but she wouldn't go to the shelter till she heard the Ack Ack guns!! Cutting it fine!! She'd stay in bed right until the last minute until she heard the bombs falling!!
