In August 1941 I was turning 21. I had a wonderful party at Co-Op. We had had a warning, and we had to go home by bus, and we all were still wearing our party clothes, and I was also carrying my presents! Worst of all, we went straight into the air-raids. Fortunately, we came out safe.
At about the same time my parents had been celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. I presented them with a cutlery set, which they cherished. When the air-raids started, my mother used to take the cutlery set outside and put it on a bucket in the middle of the garden. She did it religiously every time we were about to go to the shelter, and she genuinely believed that even if the house had had to be ruined, the cutlery set would have survived.
