I'll always remember the Battle of Britain. I was about five at the time, at home in Elson, Gosport, near Portmouth. It was a sunny day in September. I spent much of the time in a shelter, of course -- Portsmouth was virtually flattened. But when we were allowed outside, I saw high vapour trails in the sky -- it was real adventure! Mum told me to stay inside, to be careful. I heard gunfire. I just hoped they'd shoot the Germans down -- we just hated the Bosh!
