By kind permission of the author
Later, at that school, they taught us knitting,
Another skill that I already had.
This time the teacher thought it would be fitting
To have me help her teach the clumsy lad
Who shared my desk. We toiled with some success
Creating lumpy slippers which we wore
Indoors. (Outdoor shoes made too much mess.)
And what was my reward? To show yet more
Unwilling boys a skill they didn’t value,
Teasing and mocking, making me feel a fool
And I so serious. I have to tell you
I did not fit in at all at school.
