I was in primary scghool in Holland Park when a HeinkleIII crashed into Holland Park itself. As school boys we got in the HeinkleIII and collected machine gun bullets from the aircraft. They were then traded around school. While all of this was happening my cousin was actually flying a HeinkleIII and bombing London. He later became the first Air Attache to the germany Embassy in London with the rank of Brigadier General. He then went on to be in charge of Flying training in America for the post was German Airforce; and then he later went to NATO Headquarters in Brussells.
When I left primary school, I was due to go to a central school that was destroyed by a landmine. We were temporarily housed in a bungalow school which was then destroyed by incendiary bombs. By this time I was a prefect and went round the school to help salvage books and so on and found that the heat had been so intense that glass and roof tiles had been fused together. Two indendiary bombs fell on my own house, narrowly missing burning it don, but at no time did anyone from my family go into an air-raid shelter, unless in my case I was at schiool during an air raid. We were a very close knit family so I was never evacuated.
