When the sirens went when we were at school I had to take 3 or 4 other pupils home with me for safety and return on the "all clear". We never heard the "all clear"!.
In 1944 we heard that the Americans were at the Station ready for D-Day. They shaved using their helmits as bowls and they gave us gum. we didnot realise that they were on their way to the D-Day landings.
I can remember the 1000 bomber raids and the ground vibrating as the planes went overhead.
