This story was presented by Rosalie to Mary Seers, who is one of our Clockhouse volunteers. Rosalie gave permission for Mary to type up and edit her words, ready for submitting to the 大象传媒. Rosalie has two other memories in the People鈥檚 War archive: 鈥淲orking at Minns鈥 Factory, Oxford鈥 and 鈥淭he Displacement Camps鈥.
HARRY POLLITT AND D-DAY
A month or two before D-Day my husband in the 6th Airborne came home for a weekend pass. I knew something was brewing, as feelings were a little tense. Harry went over in a glider that time on D-Day, and he has taken us over to France and shown us where he crashed, miles from where he should have been.
Major Howard met us in France after the war and they had a good chat together, and said many men were lost at a place called Escoville. They were supposed to make their way to Pegasus Bridge but got blown off course.
Many of the airmen were drowned in the marshes and ditches, their full pack pulled them under the water. Others died because of the cruel spikes hammered in the water and they landed on them.
I did not know for sure I was pregnant when Harry came home in 1945 and did not see him for the whole 9 months afterwards. But I was very lucky he came home the day my son was born, in March 1946. 鈥淐utting it fine!鈥, I said.
My husband died 10 years ago in 1994, and I wonder what he would think about the world today, another war going on.
